Summary of Mid‑2023 Immigration Rule Changes

Overview: In mid‑2023, Ecuador implemented changes to its immigration policies that affect the management of tourist visas. These changes are particularly relevant for expats and frequent visitors.

Key Points:

  • One-Year Counting Period: The immigration system now tracks your stay on a one-year basis starting from the date of your last entry. Every new entry starts a fresh cycle for your tourist visa period.

  • Initial 90-Day Visa and Extension Option: When you enter Ecuador, you receive a 90-day tourist visa. If you wish to extend your stay, you may apply for an additional 90 days.

  • Extension Application Window: The visa extension can only be applied for during the window between the 80th and 90th day of your current tourist visa. This timeframe is crucial if you plan to remain in Ecuador beyond the initial 90 days.

  • Expiration of Extended Days: Once granted, the extension has its own expiration date, and the countdown for these extra days continues even if you leave Ecuador during the extended period.

  • Impact of the Anniversary Date: The “anniversary date” (one year from your last entry) is significant. If this date occurs while you are in Ecuador, your visa will not automatically renew—even if you haven’t used all your available days. To secure a new 90-day period, you must exit Ecuador before your anniversary date and then re-enter after it. Overstaying past this date can result in fines.

Why This Matters: These changes have created potential challenges for expats and frequent visitors. Misunderstanding the timing for extensions or the implications of the anniversary date can lead to fines or complications with your visa status. It is essential to carefully plan your travel dates and apply for extensions within the allowed window.

Recommendation: Before traveling to Ecuador, please check your migratory status with us to ensure you are fully informed and compliant with the latest regulations.

This revision, along with the detailed summary and recommendation, should help clarify the rules and assist expats in managing their tourist visa status in Ecuador under the updated immigration guidelines. If you have any further questions or need additional assistance, please feel free to ask!

Maybe I am misunderstanding but the above statement doesn't agree with what I ran into with immigration a couple of weeks ago (1/20/2025). I was flagged upon arrival for overstaying a tourist visa and this is how they explained it. I entered the country on September 3rd 2023 and left a week later. I entered again in January 2025 and stayed a week. I returned on August 31st 2024 and left a week later. When I returned on January 20th, 2025 I was flagged and …
