When I made the decision to move to Ecuador, it wasn’t something I took lightly. I was looking for a place where the cost of living wouldn’t be a constant burden on my shoulders but without sacrificing a good quality of life. I wanted peace, security, and the ability to enjoy each day without worrying about every penny. What I found was so much more: a vibrant country, breathtaking landscapes, a welcoming community, and, best of all, the opportunity to live comfortably on a $1,500 USD monthly budget for a couple.

During my first month in Ecuador, I set out to explore different cities to find the ideal place to settle down. My first stop was the coast, where I arrived in Manta, a lively port city where the ocean breeze is a constant companion, and fresh seafood is available on every corner. I stayed in an ocean-view apartment for just $600 USD per month—a fraction of what I would pay in the U.S. for something similar. Every morning, I would take a walk along Playa Murcielago, enjoying the serenity of the waves. A fresh ceviche lunch at a beachfront restaurant cost less than $20 USD for two, and when I decided to cook at home, just $40 USD was enough to stock my fridge with fresh fruits, vegetables, and seafood from the local market. Manta had something special, but I was eager to see more.

My next destination was Cuenca, a colonial gem nestled in the Ecuadorian highlands. As soon as I arrived, I felt as if I had stepped back in time: cobblestone streets, centuries-old churches, and a unique cultural atmosphere. Here, rent was even more affordable. I found a modern apartment in a quiet neighborhood for just $500 USD per month, with all the amenities I needed. The best part about Cuenca is that you don’t need a car—public transportation is efficient and incredibly cheap, with bus fares costing just 35 cents. I also noticed that the expat community was very active, making it easier to adapt. Between walks through Parque Calderón and cozy dinners at local cafés, I realized that on a $1,500 USD budget, I wasn’t just surviving—I was truly enjoying life without financial stress.

But my search wasn’t over yet. I decided to venture further south and arrived in Loja, a lesser-known but charming city. Here, the cost of living was even lower. I found apartments for less than $400 USD, and the atmosphere was peaceful, perfect for those seeking a slower pace of life. The city is surrounded by mountains, making it an ideal destination for nature lovers. However, I felt that Loja was better suited for someone looking for a more introspective lifestyle, away from the hustle and bustle.

After traveling through these places, I realized that not only is it possible to live in Ecuador on $1,500 USD per month, but you can do so with ease and peace of mind. Renting directly from local property owners instead of using online platforms can significantly cut costs. Shopping at municipal markets rather than supermarkets makes food both cheaper and healthier. And with so many free entertainment options—from nature hikes to cultural festivals—I never felt like I was missing out on anything.

Ultimately, I returned to Manta and decided to make it my home. The balance of coastal living, comfort, and the growing expat community convinced me that this was the ideal place for me. But if I learned anything from my journey, it’s that Ecuador has something for everyone. If you’re looking for a mild climate and a rich cultural life, Cuenca is a great choice. If absolute tranquility and low costs are your priority, Loja is waiting for you. And if, like me, you enjoy the ocean breeze and the warmth of a port city, Manta might just become your new home.

Living in Ecuador on $1,500 USD per month isn’t just a possibility—it’s a reality. The question is: are you ready to take the leap?
